Glenn Hoddle has criticism for £30m Tottenham mainstay impressing under Jose Mourinho

Glenn Hoddle has told The Kelly And Wrighty Show on Optus Sport that Moussa Sissoko is not particularly good with the ball at his feet – but has heaped praise on the Frenchman for his defensive work under Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has clearly identified his best Tottenham side – or at least it’s core. Hugo Lloris has Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier in front of him, while the trio of Sissoko, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele continue to form the midfield.

Sissoko – bought for £30million (BBC) – has been a mainstay under Mourinho, starting the last seven Premier League games and being used regularly in Europe. Now 31, Sissoko is no longer the attacking outlet he once was.

Against Chelsea, he was effectively a third centre-back – providing a layer of cover for Serge Aurier and Joe Rodon. While the Euro 2016 runner-up has come in for huge plaudits this season, Hoddle has criticised him in one area.

“Sissoko I don’t think is a great player with the ball,” Hoddle said. “But he’s doing a fantastic defensive job, almost going into a back three against Chelsea with Sissoko. Mourinho is doing what he’s done with every club, and silverware could be coming.”

TBR’s view – Hoddle is right, but it does not matter for Mourinho

Mourinho is using Sissoko to his best attributes. The former Newcastle ace has pace, stamina, strength but also plenty of tactical nous and leadership. Sissoko’s role in the side is absolutely pivotal, but he goes somewhat understated.

Used in an even more defensive role than Hojbjerg, Sissoko does not need to use his footballing ability per se. The Frenchman wins the ball back and keeps his passing simple, while also providing a crucial part of Tottenham’s defensive structure.

While Hoddle is bang on, it does not matter for Sissoko or Mourinho – as that part of his game is hardly being used.
