Glenn Hoddle claims West Ham star has been “as good as anyone” this year in the Premier League

Glenn Hoddle has claimed West Ham’s Michail Antonio has been among the best in the Premier League this year.

Antonio, who earns £70,000-a-week (Spotrac) at the London Stadium, is key part of a West Ham side that are closing in on securing European football for next season.

The 31-year-old has had a stop-start campaign at times due to a couple of minor injuries, but he’s been massive for them on the pitch when he’s been fit.

He’s scored nine goals and managed five assists in just 25 league games this season.

Hoddle, who was asked to select his England squad for this summer’s European Championships, included Antonio as a surprise inclusion.

The Hammers frontman is somebody he rates extremely highly, albeit he’s never played for England.

“This fellow was as good as anyone in the league this year. Holding the ball up, turning getting in behind. The last 10/15 minutes of a game that’s where I’m thinking you put him on,” Hoddle said.

TBR’s View:

Antionio certainly falls into the category of a late bloomer. He spent a lot of the first half of his career in the Championship, plus the early years of West Ham career saw him moved all over the pitch into different positions due to his versatility.

However, he’s made the number nine position his own in the past two campaigns.

He’s got everything you need to be a top striker with pace, power, stamina and intelligence.

There is a noticeable difference to the West Ham side when they don’t have Antonio leading the line for them as a focal point, so seeing him earn some recognition from Hoddle is something West Ham fans will love to hear.
