'Made the difference': Kris Boyd stunned by 'top quality' Rangers talent today
Glasgow Rangers got their Scottish Premiership campaign underway with a victory.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s charges played away from Ibrox in their opener, away at Livingston.
The Gers made hard work of it, conceding early on and trailing until midway the second half.
Nonetheless, Rangers got over the line, scoring two quickfire goals and holding on for victory.
Livi opened the scoring on five minutes, Joel Nouble lobbing Jon McLaughlin from inside the box.
Rangers applied the pressure thereafter, but the hosts held on to their lead until the break.
Ibrox newcomer Antonio Colak found the back of the next after the interval, but it was disallowed for offside.
Eventually, Rangers managed to find an equaliser in the 72nd minute.
Substitute Scott Arfield had not long entered the fray when he glanced home from Ryan Kent’s cross.
And two minutes later, Rangers captain James Tavernier curled in a free kick from just outside the box.
There weren’t many Gers players who stood out during the game, but Malik Tillman gave a great account of himself.
The 20-year-old came on at the break and helped to change the game for the Ibrox outfit.
Tillman was great on the ball and enabled the team to get further up the pitch.
The Bayern Munich loanee also had a great chance after coming on, but he fired straight at the goalkeeper.
Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd liked what he saw from Tillman and praised him after the match.
“The quality in the final third was lacking from Rangers in the first half so they needed to improve,” he said on Sky Sports (30/7, 14:01).
“Tillman made the difference for me as he had the creativity around the box and looked to make things happen.
“As early as this is, this is a big three points for Rangers.”
Tillman is a superb talent, who Julian Nagelsmann has described as a “top quality” player (Bundesliga website).
That quality was certainly on show today, and it’ll be exciting to see how he develops at Ibrox over the course of the season.
