Giovani Lo Celso put in a wonderful performance against Ludogorets, staking a claim to be the fourth superstar in Tottenham’s attack.

Giovani Lo Celso put in 72 minutes against Ludogorets – the most he’s played since getting 77 on September 27th. And what a 72 minutes it was.

Lo Celso scored one and created three chances, won his only tackle attempt, made two interceptions, didn’t let anyone dribble past him, and was never tackled.

It was a fantastic performance and one that stakes a real claim to be a regular at Spurs. If he keeps playing like this, they’ll stop saying Spurs have a big three up top, in fact.

Taking chances

The Argentinian is quite fortunate in that the obvious gap in the Spurs attack is in attacking midfield. Harry Kane is clearly leading the line, Son Heung-Min is looking frighteningly good from the left, and Gareth Bale is at home on the right.

But that attacking-midfield role is somewhat up for grabs. Jose Mourinho has used Tanguy Ndombele there in recent weeks but he’s not a playmaker as such.

That’s surely what Mourinho wants, though. A genuinely creative player in the hole could thrive with Kane, Son and Bale all looking to make runs and score goals.

Lo Celso fits that mould wonderfully. He’s not a player who looks to run past players – in fact, he didn’t attempt to do so once against Ludogorets – but he wants to find space and play passes.

That combines perfectly with the ‘big three’ Spurs hope to build their attack around. If Lo Celso can keep his form up, his ability to create chances could turn the £27m signing into a star.

And before long, we’d be talking about a ‘big four’ leading the fight for Tottenham.
