Giorgio Scalvini’s flaw that Newcastle United are ‘double-checking’ before pursuing the 21-year-old

TBR Football understands that Newcastle United have been working on a deal to sign Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, but they have one concern about him.

The Tyneside club have made the Italian defender one of their top summer transfer targets and are currently internally discussing a move.

Scalvini is seen as one of the most talented young defenders in Serie A and is the next hope for the Italian national team’s defence.

But whilst Eddie Howe’s team are big fans of the 21-year-old, there is currently an issue with him which they are ‘double-checking’ before firming up their interest.

Newcastle United assessing Giorgio Scalvini’s injury record

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey can confirm that Newcastle United are currently assessing Giorgio Scalvini’s injury record before making their move to sign the defender.

The 21-year-old suffered an ACL injury back in June 2024, which sidelined him for over five months, and he missed a further 25 matches during the 2024/25 season.

He’s had 13 different injuries since breaking into the first team at Atalanta, and this is a concern that Newcastle are currently considering.

Speaking to TBR Football about the situation, Bailey told TBR Football: “Newcastle are looking for a centre-half. They’ve got a few options out there.

“They have been doing work on Scalvini, but there are a few concerns. Not issues exactly, but they’re just double-checking his injury situation, because he’s missed a lot of games in the last 18 months. A couple of different injuries, so they’re checking on that.”

According to Corriere Della Sera, Scalvini is valued between £34.5 million and £43 million by Atalanta, which is a worry for a player with such an injury record.

As revealed by TBR Football, AC Milan are also targeting Scalvini, which could hamper Newcastle’s plans to sign him.

Marc Guehi remains unlikely to leave Crystal Palace this summer

Marc Guehi remains a target for Newcastle this summer, but a deal for the England international is expected to be very tricky.

Crystal Palace won’t sell Guehi for cheap, despite the defender having just 12 months left on his current deal at Selhurst Park.

At this stage, the most likely outcome remains that the 25-year-old will leave the South London club next summer on a free transfer.

“The situation is that Crystal Palace have set a price for him. Steve Parish isn’t going to let him go cheaply,” added Bailey.

“Guehi is now in a strong position, and ultimately it’s up to him. As we’ve mentioned before, it’s looking more and more likely that he could leave on a free transfer next summer.”
