The Spanish press have been quick to jump on Gini Wijnaldum after his performance for Liverpool in Madrid in midweek, with Marca claiming Barcelona were less than impressed.
Wijnaldum was a bit of a passenger throughout as Madrid dismantled the Reds in the Champions League. But with links to Barcelona this summer refusing to go away, Marca believe the Catalan giants might be having second thoughts.
A report from Marca the day after the game suggested that Barcelona could be having doubts about landing Wijnaldum. He is 31 this summer, and Marca says he risks being ‘a frustrated onlooker’ like Miralem Pjanic has found this year.
The Dutch midfielder is said to be a favourite of Ronald Koeman and has yet to put pen to paper on any new deal with Liverpool.
However, he has been just as much a part of the poor run the Reds have been on in recent months, and it is little wonder that no deal has been completed as yet between the Spaniards and Wijnaldum.
TBR View: Barcelona’s chase is a strange one, but it will probably still happen
It’s been hard to get your head around Barcelona being so obsessed with signing Wijnaldum all season. It’s not that he isn’t a good midfield player and worth a spot in the team, but the clamour for him has been odd.
He will be into his 30s this summer and has hardly been at his best for the last six months at least.
Liverpool will still want to keep him, simply because he’s experienced and settled in Merseyside. But after the showing in midweek, it’s little wonder Barcelona are getting edgy.
