Well, Gini Wijnaldum won’t have foreseen this when he left Liverpool for PSG in the summer, but the Dutchman has now been left out of the French side’s squad for their upcoming Champions League games.

Wijnaldum left the Reds on a free in the summer. At the time, there was a scramble for his signature but in the end, the former Newcastle man chose PSG, where riches and a genuine run at the Champions League will have been enticing for him.

However, things haven’t exactly gone swimmingly for Wijnaldum over in France. Often left out by Mauricio Pochettino, there was talk of a move back to England in January. Indeed, Arsenal were heavily linked and at one point, were said to be at the front of the queue.

Wijnaldum stayed put. But now, he might wish he hadn’t. As confirmed on on Twitter, Wijnaldum is one of four players to have been omitted from the 25-man squad by PSG ahead of their last 16 clash in the Champions League with Real Madrid. It means, then, that the ex-Liverpool star will play no further part this season in the European competition.

TBR’s View: Wijnaldum Should Have Stayed In Liverpool

It always seemed a strange call really. But at the end of the day, if a player harbours ambitions of moving elsewhere then you can’t really fault them.

However, Wijnaldum must surely feel he’s got this one wrong. PSG are as far away from being a ‘team’ as can be compared to Liverpool. If they do win trophies this season, it will be down to individual moments of quality.

‘Gini’, then, will probably be wishing he was back at Anfield in all honesty.
