‘Get it horribly wrong’ – Steven Gerrard reveals the influence Jurgen Klopp had on him in early Rangers days

Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, has revealed that Jurgen Klopp gave him some of the best advice of his managerial career before taking the Ibrox hot seat.

Gerrard is currently in his second season in Glasgow. Things have gone well, in the main, for Gerrard, although it looks like the Gers will once again miss out to Celtic for the league title.

The former Liverpool and England skipper is still only 39. That makes him one of the youngest managers at Europe’s bigger clubs.

And Gerrard has revealed that it was indeed current Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, who gave him bags of advice before he took the job at Ibrox.

“Go back to the beginning and strip it back like a car. Get your pitch confidence and get used to tactics and different formations. Try things, make mistakes and get it horribly, wildly wrong,” Gerrard revealed Klopp had told him. (The Mirror via UEFA)

Having played his final seasons under Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, Gerrard missed out on directly working under the German coach.

But such a big job for your first time in management was always going to warrant getting advice. And Gerrard revealed further that Klopp encouraged him to essentially not go in as Steven Gerrard.

“Don’t go into this as Steven Gerrard with the name on your back,” the Gers boss continued.

“That was the best bit of advice. I don’t think I will ever get a better piece of advice than that. Strip it right back and go back to the beginning. I have made mistakes over the last couple of years as Rangers manager but the trick is to learn from them.

Taking note of a great – TBR View

It would be silly of Steven Gerrard to not seek advice and draw influence from Klopp. The German is one of the great master tacticians and motivators in the game at the moment.

Gerrard would no doubt have loved to have learnt first-hand from Klopp. It becomes a different game altogether when you step into management. It’s good, therefore, that Gerrard can lean on his former club for advice.

It looks like sound advice from the German, too. Gerrard has done very well for Rangers in his short time there.

While the title looks like eluding him this year it’s surely only a matter of time before he brings success back to the Gers.
