Paul Merson has lamented the performances of Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, believing the Gabon star is simply ‘not playing’ at the moment.
Aubameyang has struggled massively since signing a mammoth new contract in the summer. The striker has scored just the two goals this term as the Gunners have failed to get going in front of goal as a collective.
And Merson, speaking for Sky Sports, believes Aubameyang has to do more for the club and get involved more.
“At the moment Aubameyang is not playing. You can’t play in a football match and touch the ball six times in a half. You’ve got to go and get the ball, get involved, whatever happens”.
Aubameyang has been played out on his usual left position throughout the season, as Mikel Arteta has resisted the temptation to play the striker down the middle.
A number of Arsenal players have come in for criticism, along with Aubameyang. Indeed, Merson also comments on Willian in the same interview, a player he says simply ‘hasn’t got going’.
Merson bang on, Arsenal need more from their talisman – TBR View
If Arsenal are to get their season going properly then they need their best forward to start scoring and producing. Furthermore, he’s the skipper, so to be missing from games like he is at the moment isn’t good.
Merson is right here in his assessment. Aubameyang needs to produce the goods. Annoyingly for Arsenal fans, there’s no doubting he can do it, he just needs to do it right at this moment.
