'Get him in': Matt Doherty urges World Cup manager to start picking £4m Tottenham player now
The Three Lions are gearing up for their second World Cup group game tonight on the back of that thumping 6-2 win over Iran.
A win would ensure qualification for the knockout rounds and Doherty looked ahead to the game for Tottenham’s official website.
Doherty on Dier
Doherty said: “One game to watch… it has to be England v USA, it’s on at a great time as well – 7pm on a Friday night.
“England will continue like they did the other day against Iran, but will USA also be as good as they were against Wales?
“I think it’s going to be a close game, but I think England will win, and the best USA can hope for is a draw.
“Hopefully Harry is fit and Eric plays, come on Gareth, get Eric in! England need him spraying balls around from the back. His time is coming!”
There was an insight into Gareth Southgate’s central defensive pecking order against Iran, when Dier came on in place of Harry Maguire.
That indicates that the £4 million man would be the next man in if anything happened to Harry Maguire or John Stones at the back.
There is also the chance that Southgate moves to a three-man backline at some stage, although Kyle Walker could come in on the right of a back three in that instance.
The Athletic have reported that England are set to go with an unchanged side against the United States, which makes sense given how good the performance was on Monday.
That means Doherty will not get his wish on Dier, but it seems that Kane is fit to start, which is a huge relief.
