Gerrard’s comments about Rossiter hint at opportunity to revive Rangers career

Once upon a time, Jordan Rossiter was viewed by some at Liverpool as Steven Gerrard’s natural midfield heir.

Rossiter, like Gerrard, is a Scouser with the club in his blood and was seen as an all-action midfielder who could take on the huge midfield mantle left behind by his departure.

It did not quite work out like that but Rossiter’s talent meant he looked like a coup for Rangers when he joined the club back in 2016.

Rossiter’s stock fell further as his move north of the border was not panning out as a success. But it was easy to see how Gerrard might invigorate the Liverpool academy graduate when he was appointed as Rangers boss this summer.

For much of the season so far, that had not proved to be the case either. Injuries had not helped but Rossiter was slipping towards ‘remember him?’ territory.

But he was handed a start in the 4-1 win over Hamilton on Sunday, and Gerrard offered some warm praise for the midfielder; stating he could rely on him to do a job for the team if required.

That opens the door for an unlikely Ibrox redemption. If Rossiter can realise some of the potential he showed as a young player, Gerrard will have a very good player on his hands. Watch this space…
