Gerrard should bring Kelly back as McGregor successor at Rangers

In Allan McGregor, Rangers have a safe pair of hands between the sticks.

The Scotland international is as reliable as ever, despite coming towards the end of his career.

The 36-year-old, who turns 37 in January, signed a two-year deal in the summer as he returned to Rangers.

But when his deal expires, he will be 38 and perhaps that might be the end of his playing career.

Rangers need to start thinking about a potential long-term replacement for the veteran stopper.

In the summer, Rangers decided to let Liam Kelly leave. The young goalkeeper was not in the first-team picture and he completed a permanent switch to Livingston.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form for Livingston this season and this has surely caught Steven Gerrard’s eye.

Just before the international break, Kelly was instrumental in ensuring Livingston kept a clean sheet to earn a 0-0 draw with Celtic.

And then last weekend, the Scotland youth international returned to Ibrox with an impressive display between the posts.

Livingston may have lost 3-0 but Kelly kept the score respectable with a fine demonstration of his goalkeeping ability.

Rangers are close to Kelly’s heart but he admitted he had to leave for the sake of his own career.

In September, Kelly told The Scotsman: “If I ever want to play for Rangers, then I had to leave Rangers – if that makes sense to people”

Now that he has proven himself elsewhere, Gerrard could bring him back as McGregor’s successor.
