Gerrard sends message to Rangers board about future of his “best players”

With the transfer deadline approaching, Steven Gerrard does not appear to be trying to pull off any late deals. The Rangers boss is happy with his squad as it is. However, the threat of a player being sold remains.

Gerrard is adamant that none of his best players should be allowed to leave Ibrox Stadium before the close of the transfer window. As quoted by the Daily Record, the former Liverpool midfielder said, “none of my best players are going. I haven’t had any assurance. I’ve just said the decision myself…Letting one of our best players go now weakens us seriously. And it is almost impossible now to go and get a player from another club to replace him. So I’d be extremely disappointed if the board didn’t back me on that decision”.

Losing a key first team star, such as Alfredo Morelos or James Tavernier, would certainly weaken the Gers. If they’re serious about challenging Celtic for the title this year then they needs to keep their best players at the club.

TBR’s view

Gerrard is sending a clear message to the board here. If the club were to sanction the sale of a key player between now and the end of the transfer window, the manager would interpret that as a betrayal. His job is to make Rangers competitive, which would be made near impossible following the loss of top players.

Gerrard, and Rangers fans alike, will all be hoping that the club’s hierarchy show the manager the support in this matter that he is calling for.
