Newcastle United fans got their first look at new signing Nick Woltemade during Germany’s World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.
During the summer transfer, Newcastle United signed Woltemade for £69million as Eddie Howe attempted to bolster his attacking options for the 2025-26 campaign.
With the Magpies losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool, Woltemade is under a lot of pressure, and fans were keen to see him in action on international duty.
However, it was a day to forget for everyone involved in the German squad, as Slovakia surprisingly defeated them 2-0.

Nick Woltemade was too careless for Germany
Woltemade played the entire game for Germany against Slovakia, leading the line as the lone striker, as Julian Nagelsmann’s side struggled to create opportunities.
German media outlet Ran rated Woltemade’s performance five out of 10. The striker had the fewest touches (26) of any outfield player who played for the full 90 minutes as he failed to get into the game.
‘The €90 million man is the sole striker, but isn’t having his best day. He runs a lot, but mostly for nothing. He misses two promising header opportunities far too carelessly.’
| Match Stats | Woltemade |
| Total Shots | 3 |
| Accurate Passes | 10/16 (63%) |
| Successful Dribbles | 0/1 (0%) |
| Ground Duels Won | 1/4 (25%) |
Frankfurter Rundschau also rated Woltemade a five out of 10, providing a scathing review of his overall performance.
‘Third international match, third start. It was the new Newcastle striker’s most underwhelming performance in a German national team jersey.’
BILD claimed that the striker was ‘almost invisible,’ as he evidently struggled to impact the game in the manner Germany would’ve wanted, which will set alarm bells ringing for Newcastle United fans.
The pressure will not decrease for Nick Woltemade at Newcastle United
While Woltemade didn’t have his greatest day at the office for Germany, expectations will remain high for his Newcastle United debut, which could take place against Wolves on September 13.
The 23-year-old striker will have the difficult task of replacing Isak’s goals at St. James’ Park, but he will be arriving with a lot of excitement.
TBR Football revealed that Howe was excited to sign Woltemade because he wanted to join the Magpies and didn’t need convincing about the project, which is what he looks for in a player.
Howe isn’t the only person who is looking forward to seeing the German international compete in the Premier League, as Micah Richards praised Woltemade and made it clear that signing him is “good business.”
