Third-tier German side MSV Duisburg have confirmed on their website that they have completed the signing of Marvin Compper from Celtic on a two-year deal, ending a nightmare 18-month spell at Celtic Park.
Compper, 34, joined Celtic in January 2018 as a signing Brendan Rodgers felt the club needed – an older head at the back that is more than adept at playing with the ball at his feet.
Fast forward 18 months, and the Germany international has managed one Celtic appearance. Injuries and a lack of both quality and momentum have left the former RB Leipzig and Fiorentina player in the reserves.
Now, Duisburg have swooped to finally end Compper’s dismal time in Scotland, bringing him back to Germany though somewhat surprisingly, Compper has accepted to join a side in the third tier of German football.
TBR’s view
Compper was simply nowhere near good enough. Rodgers was strong in the transfer window, but the odd interesting recruit did come through the doors – Cristian Gamboa, Dorus de Vries, Kundai Benyu and more.
Compper was certainly an example of that, with the veteran simply not capable of keeping up with the pace of the Scottish game. Though he had a year left on his Celtic deal, it is likely he was offloaded by the Hoops for nothing.
