Lewis Holtby was a surprise name linked with a move to Rangers back in March as his Hamburger SV contract looked set to expire – and if the Gers are really interested, then they have just received a boost.
The Daily Record reported the link between Rangers and the 28-year-old playmaker, who has played in the Premier League for both Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham. He even has three Germany caps.
But Holtby’s career has somewhat dwindled in recent years, and he played for Hamburg in the second tier of German football this season. He scored five times and created six more in 31 games.
Now, Rangers may have received a boost if they are indeed after Holtby. That is because Hamburg have published their retained list on their official website, and Holtby is being released.

It means Holtby is definitely going to be a free agent this summer, and it remains to be seen where he will end up with Rangers the only side linked with a move for the ex-Schalke star.
The German is renowned for his battling style of play and hard work, but also his impeccable technique and vision. With game time and trust from the fans and staff, there is no reason why he would not shine in Scotland.
Rangers need a number 10 and although Scott Arfield and Steven Davis have done a job, an out-and-out second striker is key. Holtby can be that man, ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.
The lure of European football will only entice Holtby, and the Gers have got to do everything within their power to land the midfielder.
