Excitement is high at Liverpool ahead of the new season. After making it to the Champions League final last term the hope is the Reds can now push on and have success in the Premier League.
They have certainly done some good business with that aim in mind. Fabinho has arrived from Monaco whilst Naby Keita will finally arrive at Anfield from RB Leipzig.
But those two transfers will no doubt have some Liverpool players wondering about their long-term futures at the club. One player who might be particularly concerned is Georginio Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016 in a deal worth £25 million. He went on to have a good first season with the club, scoring six goals in 42 appearances.
Last season was also above average. He played 49 times and Jurgen Klopp must be a fan.
However, with the new recruits and Wijnaldum’s somewhat limited ability, it is easy to see why some fans may believe his time at Anfield could be coming to an end.
In terms of defensive midfield, Liverpool now have Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner. If they wanted Wijnaldum to be more attacking in the centre of the park he will need to usurp Keita, Adam Lallana and Liverpool are also said to be keen on Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
The 27-year-old is undoubtedly a good player but it seems that Liverpool may be going past his current level in terms of performance and personnel.
Certainly, he could still have a future at Liverpool and fans would love him to do so. But Wijnaldum will need to be at his absolute best to maintain his first-team place at Anfield.
