A report in the Sun this week has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur are open to the departure of Lucas Moura. The report suggests Spurs are happy to offload the winger, with La Liga side Real Betis looking to swoop.
It would be something of a shock from Spurs. Moura only joined the club in January from PSG. The Brazilian arrived for £23 million and struggled to have an impact in his first six months at the club. That was understandable. He had barely played for the French side that season and looked off the pace.
Which is why it is a surprise to hear Tottenham could move him on, especially after he scored twice v Roma in pre-season.
But could the form of another seemingly outcast Tottenham winger be the reason behind these rumours?
Georges-Kevin Nkoudou’s time at Tottenham seemed up this summer. The Frenchman, who cost £9.4 million in 2016, had failed to make an impact at Spurs and was loaned out to Burnley last season.
But he has been fantastic this summer. Looking fresh and lively in a Tottenham squad stripped to the bare bones by the World Cup and injury problems Nkoudou has thrived.
The 23-year-old was man-of-the-match and scored against Barcelona this summer. Yesterday he scored the winner as Tottenham beat AC Milan 1-0.
With Tottenham eyeing up Wilfried Zaha it would make sense for one of their wingers to be moved on as a consequence. With the likes of Heung-min Son and Erik Lamela also present, Tottenham would be spoilt for choice.
Perhaps the form of Nkoudou has pushed Moura into the more vulnerable position.
