Brothers Sean and Matty Longstaff inspired their boyhood club Newcastle United to victory over Manchester United. And both players were visibly delighted during a double interview with Sky Sports after the game.

Matty Longstaff was making his debut in the Premier League. But the teenager was not fazed by the occasion and he scored the winning goal with a low driven shot.

With a smile on his face throughout the interview, Matty told Sky Sports: “Last night you go to bed dreaming of this but you never think it’s going to happen. I’m over the moon – I’m speechless.

“Butterflies started to go yesterday and looking forward to going out, to do it was even better. It’s a big thing and I was buzzing. Can’t really describe it – running away to the fans and cheering, it’s a surreal feeling.”

While it was Matty’s debut, Sean is now a regular in the Newcastle line-up. The 21-year-old’s form has dipped lately but – perhaps buoyed by his brother’s presence – he lifted his game against United.

He showed the form that saw him become a fan favourite last season. Both of the brothers are local lads and boyhood fans. This showed in their performance and reflected in the post-match interview.

Sean was proud of his brother. He told Sky Sports: “I’m over the moon for him. If I’m being honest, he’s been unlucky to be out of the team. But today he’s been a breath of fresh air. He was outstanding and deserves all the credit he’s going to get.”

TBR’s view

This is just what Newcastle needed – two local lads lifting the club out of the slump and bringing a feelgood factor back. Both of these players represent the club badge with pride and know what it means to wear the black and white stripes.

And the brothers seem to have the right character to succeed too. This was summed up by Matty, when awarded the man of the match prize, saying that Sean should have received it.
