Journalist Mike McGrath has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur have a genuine interest in signing Brennan Johnson this summer, with Nottingham Forest open to letting him go for the right price.

McGrath was speaking on the Last Word On Spurs podcast as Tottenham continue to improve their squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Micky van de Ven and Alejo Veliz became the latest through the door.

There are still a number of areas which require attention. And of course, one of those could be in attack, particularly if Harry Kane departs.

The Daily Mail reported in July that Tottenham want Brennan Johnson if Kane leaves. The report noted that Nottingham Forest value the Wales international at £50 million following his impressive first campaign in the Premier League.

Tottenham interest in Brennan Johnson is genuine

McGrath was asked about the links with Johnson. And he suggested that Tottenham definitely do want to land the 22-year-old in this window.

“But Brennan Johnson certainly, from my information, there is genuine interest there. That is somebody that Spurs are looking at,” he told Last Word On Spurs.

“A very exciting talent that Forest would possibly be up for selling at the right price. So it would be an expensive one. But certainly, that is one that I’ve heard that they’ve been looking at.”

Johnson established himself as one of the most exciting talents in the Premier League last season. He managed to score eight goals as Steve Cooper’s men managed to keep themselves in the top-flight.

If he builds on that success, he could prove to be a bargain for someone at £50 million – given some of the fees being spent in this window.

But obviously, it is going to be a huge task for Tottenham’s attack if they do lose Harry Kane in this window. The side has been built around the England captain for so many years now. And where Spurs would have been without him last season has been discussed by many.

Johnson is a ‘fantastic‘ talent. So Forest may be braced to have to respond to offers in the final weeks of the window.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham are one of those who test their resolve.
