‘Generational’: Some Man City fans react as Pep Guardiola lauds Phil Foden
Some Man City fans have been reacting on social media, after Pep Guardiola told BT Sport that Phil Foden has the most potential of any player he has worked with since Lionel Messi.
Foden has been one of the stars of the Citizens’ season as they won the Premier Ligue and Carabao Cup. They will hope to make it a treble with the Champions League against Chelsea in the final on Saturday night.
Foden was instrumental to Man City making it to the final, having run the show against Paris Saint-Germain in the semis. The 20-year-old caused the Ligue 1 giants a raft of issues and teed Riyad Mahrez up to score their side’s second in the second-leg with a sublime pass.
The Stockport-born maestro’s vision was sublime and is improving every game in terms of his strength. Foden is also coming on leaps and bounds with his end product, returning 16 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season.
Guardiola has certainly been impressed by the England international who will have a big role to play at Euro 2020. Describing the Man City product as the most promising player he has seen since Barcelona and Argentina icon Messi.
“Well, the best is Messi, first,” Guardiola said. “Second, I didn’t meet Leo Messi at 17-years-old like I met Phil and that age, I’ve never seen a player with this potential. But you have to see it on the pitch and on the biggest stages.”
Guardiola added: “[Foden] has everything to become one of the best players. I have said many times in press conferences, but maybe not said it in front of him. Phil is the most, most, most talented player I have ever seen in my career as a manager.”
