Gelson Martins was certainly a hot commodity in January. His struggles at Atletico Madrid and their need to raise money to sign Alvaro Morata made him a potential signing for a whole host of clubs.
One such interested party was said to be Newcastle United. As reported by Sky Sports, Rafa Benitez made inquiries regarding his potential signature. However, Martins preferred to join Monaco and help them in their relegation battle.

Newcastle were no doubt left disappointed and it is now clear to see why.
The Portuguese international has been in fine form for Monaco, helping them fight back in their relegation battle.
The winger has played four times for the Monegasque club. In those games, he has assisted three goals and scored two. At the weekend, he scored the winner v Nantes as Monaco moved up to 16th in Ligue 1.
Newcastle eventually got Miguel Almiron through the door. But Martins is already showing the sort of impact he could have had at St James’ Park.
