Tottenham have confirmed the signing of Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan from Benfica with a view to making the deal permanent for £43million (Standard) – and the Portuguese ace has posted on Instagram for the first time as a Spurs player.
Fernandes, 21, has joined Spurs after plenty of reported Premier League interest from London rivals Chelsea and West Ham this month – as well as Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton. The Portugal international has been drafted in as cover for Moussa Sissoko.
The latter is out until March through injury and Fernandes has been brought in to lighten the load on the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Eric Dier, Harry Winks and Tottenham’s other midfield players.
Fernandes – whose parents currently reside in north London and have been to watch Tottenham matches – has caught the eye with his performances for Benfica. He has already clocked up 59 outings for the Portugese giants.
Wearing the number 83 shirt, Gedson is renowned for his driving runs from deep in midfield and his somewhat surprising strength. He has scored three senior goals, two of which in European football and one against Bayern Munich.
For the first time as a Spurs player, Gedson posted on Instagram. He described the move to Spurs as a “new chapter” but is confident that he is “ready” to take on the challenge of going up a level from Portuguese football to the Premier League.
