Martyn Waghorn put in an impressive two-goal display for Derby against Stoke on Saturday, although the Rams had to be content with a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.
Gary Rowett gave his thoughts on the game between two of his former clubs to EFL on Quest, 9:13pm, 17/08, and managed to find fault in Waghorn’s display.
About a clip where Waghorn ran through bit missed a chance to complete a hat-trick, Rowett said: “We had a disagreement on the dink. I’m not a dink fan, not when you’re on a hat-trick.
“If he scores, fantastic. But for me, I just think he needs to put a little bit more power into it. It’s a great chance to go and win the game.”
TBR’s View – Big opportunity to get three points missed
Rowett’s comments may come across as overly harsh – or perhaps be interpreted in a different way because he’s a former Derby manager – but he’s got a point.
Waghorn’s confidence was shown by the fact that he did try and dink the keeper, but ultimately, he missed the chance to clinch all three points for his side on the road.
Criticising a player for not getting a hat-trick feels like nit-picking but it’s those fine margins that make all the difference in the Championship and Waghorn may wish he’d just put his foot through it now.
