Gary O’Neil says he was shocked after seeing what £27m Arsenal player did vs Wolves

Arsenal picked up an impressive 2-0 win over Wolves at the Emirates on the opening day of the new season.

The Gunners fell short of winning the Premier League title in each of the last two campaigns. Manchester City proved to be too good in the end.

Mikel Arteta wants to get one over his old employers this season, and his side have gotten off to a great start with a victory against Wolves.

A number of Arsenal players performed well on Saturday, but one of them in particular amazed Gary O’Neil during the game.

Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz were the stars of the show for Arsenal against Wolves.

The Gunners started the game brilliantly and were all over the visitors in the first half. Saka picked out Havertz with a wonderful cross, and the German scored with a lovely header.

Then, in the second half, Havertz returned the favour by assisting Saka’s goal, which Mikel Arteta claimed was Lionel Messi-esque.

Saka has been named Arsenal’s man of the match and he deserves the recognition, but David Raya did something incredible as well.

The Spaniard, who completed a permanent move to Arsenal for £27 million this summer (Sky Sports), pulled off an unbelievable save to deny Jorgen Strand Larsen’s header.

It looked like a certain goal, but Raya shocked everyone with his save, including Wolves boss O’Neil.

He said in his press conference after the game, as relayed on HaytersTV: “I was pleased with Jorgen. Obviously a tough one for him, first taste of the Premier League and up against probably the best defensive partnership in the league in Saliba and Gabriel.

“His movement to lose the centre-back and his contact on the header was excellent. A fantastic header, good cross, and I don’t know how David Raya saves that.

“I think everybody, when it hits his head that close to the goal and such good contact, you’re just waiting for the net (to bulge).

“Big goalkeepers at big sides that are chasing titles sometimes come up with magic moments that can change games, and that was a big one from David Raya.”

David Raya could set a new Arsenal record this season

Raya missed six games in the Premier League in the 2023/24 season, but he still managed to win the Golden Glove.

The Spaniard kept 16 clean sheets in 32 games and conceded just 24 goals all season. That is very impressive, but he could do better this time around.

Arsenal already had the best defence in the Premier League last season, but they’ve gotten better now thanks to the arrival of Riccardo Calafiori and the availability of Jurrien Timber.

The record for most clean sheets in a single Premier League season by an Arsenal goalkeeper is held by David Seaman – he kept 19 clean sheets in the 1993/94 season as well as the 1998/99 campaign.

Raya is expected to play all 38 games this season, and there’s every chance he will break Seaman’s record by the end of this campaign.
