Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane may have had a part to play in Spurs reversing their decision to furlough non-playing staff under a government scheme.

Spurs had planned to use the furlough scheme on offer, which sees the UK government pay 80 percent of an employee’s wages, up to £2,500 per month, until they are able to resume their job full time.

Tottenham announced at the end of March that 550 non-playing employees were to take a paycut in an attempt to “protect jobs”, a statement which caused controversy amongst many fans and commentators.

However, Spurs have since reversed the decision, with non-playing staff now set to receive “100 percent of their pay for April and May” and only board members now taking salary reductions.

“I don’t think Kane will be impressed with his club a couple of weeks ago, with what they did,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I think he’s a good lad Harry Kane, and I think he was poking them back, and warning them and saying that’s not something that we do.”

With so much economic uncertainty around not just the world of football but across every facet of life in the UK, the news that one of the biggest clubs in the world to make use of the government scheme didn’t sit well with many people.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Tottenham declared a £69million profit last year, and their revenue of more than £460m makes them the eighth largest club in the world, according to Deloitte’s rankings, while club owner Joe Lewis is reported to be worth £4.3billion.

Spurs’ decision to overturn their original plan has been welcomed by fans and commentators alike, and it is hoped that relations between the club and their supporters and wider community can now start being restored.
