Gary Neville slams Christian Eriksen for performance v Liverpool

Gary Neville has criticised the display of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen in yesterday’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

Much of the blame after the game was layed at the door of Tottenham’s full-backs. Danny Rose was at fault for Jordan Henderson’s equalizer whilst Serge Aurier’s dismal defending saw Spurs concede a penalty.

However, Neville, as part of the full-back union, pointed to the shape of the team as a major problem for both players in his role as a pundit on Sky Sports.

He felt Tottenham were too narrow and whilst Heung-min Son did his fair share of defensive duties on the left, Danish international Eriksen did not do his job on the opposite flank.

“I thought Eriksen was really poor. He looked disinterested.

“He wanted to leave (in the summer), he wanted to go to a club and he didn’t get what he wanted.

“They (the full-backs) struggled. I don’t think they were helped by the narrowness.

“Eriksen and Son in those wide areas. Son did it a little bit, a lot better than Eriksen. Eriksen didn’t want to be there. It opened up the pass all the way. They were just exposed.”

TBR’s View

Son certainly offered far more protection for Rose than Eriksen did for Aurier. The Dane was, yet again, poor for Spurs and is still playing like a player who simply does not want to be at the club.

He was consistently breezed past by Andy Robertson and in attack, he offered nothing to justify his presence.

As much as Aurier deserves blame for his part in Tottenham’s loss, Eriksen should be fairly embarrassed by his lackadaisical display.
