‘Really poor’: Gary Neville shocked by 23-year-old Arsenal player v Liverpool

Gary Neville has criticised Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale for the role he played in Liverpool’s opener on Wednesday night.

The 23-year-old has been sensational for most of the season, helping the Gunners maintain a Premier League top-four challenge.

Prior to Arsenal’s meeting with Liverpool at the Emirates, Ramsdale had conceded just 20 goals in 23 top-flight appearances.

The summer signing has also kept 15 clean sheets for Mikel Arteta’s side.

However, Ramsdale should’ve done much better for Liverpool’s first goal at the Emirates on Wednesday.

Diogo Jota took a shot towards the near post from a tight angle, which should’ve been a fairly routine save.

Ramsdale didn’t get enough on it to keep it out, the effort coming off his hand and finding the back of the net.

“That is really poor goalkeeping,” Neville said on Sky Sports (16/3/22, 21:27). “It just goes through his hand.”

Liverpool’s goal came on 54 minutes, and just eight minutes later, the Reds broke Arsenal’s resistance once again.

Andrew Robertson pounced on a loose ball to set up Roberto Firmino, who was there to slot home from point-blank range.

Rare error from Ramsdale, but he’ll bounce back

Ramsdale has been superb all season, but even the best goalkeepers will make the odd mistake now and then.

Early in the game, the Arsenal stopper made a fine save from Virgil van Dijk.

However, Ramsdale looked a bit shaky after Jota’s goal.

He’s made of strong stuff though, and he’ll bounce back.

Likewise, Arsenal are still on track for a top-four finish, so they’ll need to put this behind them and regroup for Aston Villa away on Saturday.
