Gary Neville shares what he noticed about Jose Mourinho as Tottenham lose to Man United

Gary Neville has told his Sky Sports podcast that Jose Mourinho’s expression in the final moments of Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Manchester United on Sunday evening might prove to be a concern for the club, claiming he looked “blank”.

Spurs produced a dismal second-half display despite going into the break 1-0 up thanks to Son Heung-min’s opener on 40 minutes. But they collapsed in the next 45, as Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood all scored past Hugo Lloris.

Mourinho failed to change the tide with his substitutions, bizarrely choosing to bring on Moussa Sissoko while Gareth Bale only emerged for the final 10 minutes. Dele Alli and Carlos Vinicius remained on the bench as unused substitutes.

Covering the game for Sky Sports, Neville told his post-match podcast that Mourinho looked as though he had a “blankness” about him. He also claimed that Mourinho looked like he wasn’t engaged – claiming “it didn’t feel right”.

“I just looked at him in that last five, 10 minutes, there was an element of just a blankness on his face. He didn’t look like he is engaged. That would be a worry. That’s not to say they’ve gone on the manager – I didn’t like it, it didn’t feel right,” Neville said.

TBR’s view – Have Spurs blown their top-four chances?

Sunday felt like a big game, and the result could determine which way it would go. West Ham beat Leicester City and while The Foxes are now being dragged back into a fight to finish into the top four, the chances of Spurs getting in there looks unlikely.

A win, and it is a different story. But Spurs are now in a lowly seventh and could go into eighth, if Brighton lose to Everton on Monday night. They are six points behind West Ham, who continue to motor on under David Moyes. Top-six should be the aim.
