Gary Neville says what was ‘clueless’ about Manchester United’s performance against Chelsea

Not many pundits know Manchester United as well as Gary Neville and the former Red Devils defender ha s once again criticised his former team after their performance against Chelsea.

United got themselves into the lead through a Bruno Fernandes penalty but were once again pegged back as Moises Caicedo levelled soon after.

For interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, it was more of a wake up call as to the challenges this United team faces when compared to the 5-2 win over Leicester in midweek.

At times, United were simply too easy to play through and on another day, Chelsea would have exploited it.

In the end, a draw was about right in what was a poor quality game.

However, rather than praise United, Gary Neville has instead slammed one particular element of their performance.

Gary Neville hits out at ‘clueless’ Manchester United press against Chelsea

Speaking about United’s performance in general on commentary for Sky Sports, former right back Neville lamented United’s lack of quality, and in particular, called out the issues with the press.

“It is almost as if the ball is passed from one red shirt to another and they only decide what they are going to do it with it then. There are no combinations,” Neville said.

“It is clunky and awkward. And they are clueless on the press.”

Shades of Ten Hag’s United against Chelsea

It must be said that you cannot dig out Ruud van Nistelrooy on these performances as he’s very much doing his best with what was left.

But this performance today was just what we’d got used to seeing in the Erik ten Hag days and if Chelsea had been on song, they’d have won this easily.

For United, the arrival of Ruben Amorim cannot come quickly enough and it’s vital he imparts his own ways on this team and that the whole squad buys into it.

If not, United will find themselves back at square one and ultimately, looking for yet another manger at some point down the road.
