Gary Neville says Manchester City have a truly 'incredible talent' in their ranks
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been praised by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who hopes the Etihad Stadium prodigy can enjoy Champions League glory with his club and Euro 2020 glory with England.
The 20-year-old has enjoyed a superb season for the Citizens, registering 16 goals and 10 assists from 49 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Foden has been increasingly influential in recent months, standing out in the Champions League victories over Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.
The playmaker has also impressed for England, winning six caps and scoring twice, and is likely to be one of the Three Lions’ main men at Euro 2020.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville says he feels an affinity with Foden as he’s a local lad, adding that he’s as excited to see him playing for England as he was with Paul Gascoigne, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney.
“I feel warm towards Foden in a sense of he’s a local kid and because of my upbringing at United, I do feel really passionate about local lads doing well and Greater Manchester producing great football players,” he said.
“This is one incredible talent and it’s gone beyond talking about his potential talent – he’s a performer. In the big games, this lad steps up, he’s someone to contend with.
“They are not just looking at Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling or Riyad Mahrez, they are looking at Foden as being someone who influences huge matches.
“I hope that continues for England’s sake. We are going to see him in an England shirt this summer and I hope he lights the tournament up.
“I have not been excited about seeing a young player in a tournament since Rooney in 2004.
“You think of Owen in ’98 and Gascoigne in ’90 – these are English players who light up tournaments and Foden has the ability to do that.”
Foden showed flashes of brilliance last year and you just knew he was a star in the making, while this season he’s shown just how amazing he is.
At just 20 years of age, he’s already looking very much in the same bracket of future superstars as Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe.
