Gary Neville reacts to Mohamed Salah's display for Liverpool

Gary Neville told Super Sunday (broadcast on Sky Sports; 16/10; 17:37) that Mohamed Salah was brilliant for Liverpool during their clash with Manchester City at Anfield.

Salah has had a turbulent season so far. Of course, he endured a frustrating time last weekend as Liverpool were beaten at Arsenal.

There would have been hope amongst the fanbase that midweek would prove to be a turning point for the Egyptian. Salah scored the fastest hat-trick in the Champions League in Liverpool’s 7-1 win at Rangers.

Mohamed Salah was brilliant

Paul Merson told Sportskeeda that he expected Salah to be a completely different player against City. And it did indeed appear that Liverpool saw something much more like the best of Salah against the Cityzens.

Salah was excellent in a much more familiar front three, which included Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota. And early on in the second-half, he got the chance to run through on goal.

Somehow however, Ederson was able to tip the effort round the post. Nevertheless, Neville was full of praise for Salah’s display up until that point.

“This is the moment. He has been absolutely brilliant, Salah,” he told Super Sunday. “He spins Dias and Dias is on his backside and they can’t catch him. He’s just staring down Ederson. It’s a really brilliant save and touch from the Manchester City goalkeeper.”

It did appear that the system Jurgen Klopp used last week did not play to Salah’s strengths. And with that, he may be wondering how exactly he gets the best out of all of his attacking players.

But Salah showed glimpses of why he has been one of the greatest players in Premier League history. And it perhaps remains the case that getting everything from Salah sees Liverpool move to a completely different level.

The Reds are still a work in progress. But the resumption of his era-defining rivalry in the Premier League seemed to unlock a much better performance out of Liverpool.

And while he was denied first time around, he would not miss when another opportunity presented itself. Salah, once again, was Liverpool’s match winner on a day where their season may have just threatened to finally ignite.
