Anthony Gordon was the hero for Newcastle United today as he scored a controversial winner to beat Arsenal live on Sky Sports.

Gordon’s goal was checked by VAR for a number of potential issues but was eventually given to send the home crowd into raptures.

For Newcastle, it was yet another brilliant result and performance and a sign that they are very much here to stay when it comes to fighting for the top four again.

And watching on for Sky on co-comms, Gary Neville was very impressed with Gordon’s performance and week in general.

Gary Neville praises Anthony Gordon after Newcastle v Arsenal

Speaking after the game on Sky, Neville admitted he’d been really impressed with Newcastle this week.

And in particular, he felt Gordon has got the Newcastle crowd won over.

“I’ve watched Newcastle twice in three days and their performances have been fantastic. Today was about spirit and fight, defensive determination and Gordon has had a fantastic week, he has come to life in a black-and-white shirt and this crowd really love him,” Neville said.

“And well done to Eddie Howe and Newcastle, who really have performed well today, their defensive work was outstanding.”

Gordon has been outstanding in recent weeks and looks very much the player Eddie Howe thought he was buying from Everton.

Gordon is shining for the Toon

There were some fans who were probably waiting for Gordon to spring into life and questioning the decision to spend big money on him.

However, in recent months the former Everton man has turned a corner and look an absolute star.

Indeed, it could even lead to a late charge towards the England squad for Gordon. If he can keep this form up, he’ll be very hard to ignore going into the Euros next year.

Newcastle were superb defensively against Arsenal and when it mattered, Gordon had the goal to seal the three points.

The Toon Army, it seems, are in for another memorable season.
