‘From the very first minute’: Gary Neville says £10m Liverpool player was so clever against Tottenham

Gary Neville has been praising Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson for how he read the game against Tottenham yesterday.

Liverpool won 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. It was a much-needed win for the Reds, who have had a stuttering campaign in the Premier League so far.

Mo Salah was the star of the show once again. He fired in two goals in the first half to make Spurs’ task nigh on impossible. However, speaking on his Podcast for Sky Sports, Gary Neville felt that left-back Robertson deserved praise for picking up on how much space he had right from the off.

“We talk about Trent Alexander-Arnold with the attacking, but Robertson smelt where the game was. From the very first minute and I thought, he’s clever Robertson. He’s not just a great full-back, he’s a smart full-back. And he gets down that side, and then the first goal comes from it,” Neville said.

“I just thought straight away Conte leaving Robertson there was a problem.”

Robertson has missed a few games this season for Jurgen Klopp. Along with so many others in the squad, the Scot has fallen foul of injury.

However, he is now back and at his best it seems. And that can only be a positive for Klopp and this Liverpool team after the defender had a few nightmare moments vs Leeds last weekend.

TBR’s View: Robertson one of the best at what he does

We’ve seen Andy Robertson time and again prove how good he is and he was at it yesterday. As Neville says, he seemed to sniff out his chance right from the off and Tottenham never really dealt with it.

When Robertson is playing well, Liverpool are a different side. He built such a good relationship with Sadio Mane before and when Luis Diaz comes back, the Reds will be a happy team.

Liverpool needed that win yesterday at Spurs. And Robertson – who they got for just £10m – proved key once more for the Reds.
