Gary Neville offers honest assessment on Newcastle takeover

Sky Sports regular and former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville, has had his say on the controversial takeover of Newcastle United in the last week.

The PIF Group have taken charge of Newcastle and are set to pump a huge amount of money into the club in the coming years. The group follow a number of billionaire owners in having huge investing stakes into Premier League clubs.

Naturally, a number of pundits, ex-players, and current managers have had their say on the Newcastle situation already this week. And speaking on The Overlap this week, Neville said that the Premier League already has a lot to answer for.

Where I come from on it is you either take a stance that our country should never accept investment from these countries. Or you say we will allow them into English football and it’s part of what their change they might go through as a country,” Neville said.

“My view is I would want Saudi Arabia to change. I’d want Qatar to change, China to change. I always believe you’re better having these people round the table to be able to allow them to change. What I would like to do through football is pressure Saudi Arabia to change far quickly than they have been in recent years.”

The issues over human rights and other social factors in the Middle East have caused major concern among some. However, as the Newcastle fans on the Overlap commented, there has been suggestions that Toon fans should not be blamed for supporting a change in ownership.

TBR’s View: Measured and passionate from Neville as usual

There’s no point going into the nitty gritty of the takeover and off-field issue and more. It’s a minefield and one you can easily get caught up in.

But Neville is bang on in his assessment here at least. He is passionate, but measured, and that’s how it should be as a pundit.

Subsequently, the Sky man is on the money with his opinion and offers an insightful view of both sides of the coin.
