Gary Neville has told Monday Night Football (broadcast on 10/5; 22:48) that he has been really disappointed with Son Heung-min in the last couple of months as he explained why the Spurs star was not in his Premier League Team of the Season.

Son has been one of Tottenham’s real shining lights this term. He is second only to Harry Kane in terms of both goals and assists – and he is some way clear of any other teammates.

The 28-year-old has scored 17 goals and contributed 10 assists. However, he perhaps looked to be on course for much bigger tallies after an incredible start to the season.

He, once again, scored against Leeds on Saturday after finding the back of the net against the same opposition at the start of January. However, there were just four league goals in between those two fixtures against the Whites.

And Neville suggested that his form since the turn of the year cost him a place in his Team of the Season as he picked Marcus Rashford ahead of him.

“The last couple of months, and I love Son as a player, but the last couple of months, he’s really disappointed me. I can’t get that Carabao Cup final out of my head,” he told Monday Night Football.

“I just thought they were really disappointing, Spurs. He’s a brilliant player, exceptional talent, but I changed him at the last minute.”

The encouraging thing for Tottenham is Son looks to be getting back towards his best. He has now scored four in his last six in all competitions.

He is one of the players a new manager should be desperately excited to work with. And he is one leaving fans with some hope that the rebuild may not need to take too long.

This season has been his best for goals. And he only needs to set up one more to be able to say the same about his assists tally, too.
