Gary Neville in awe at one of the ‘best’ things he’s seen a player do during Chelsea v Liverpool

Gary Neville was impressed with a moment of magic in Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday.

Moises Caicedo’s thunderbolt from the edge of the box put Enzo Maresca’s side ahead at Stamford Bridge, but the champions hit back when Cody Gakpo fired into the roof of the net.

However, there was drama right at the death when Estevao Willian netted a 95th-minute winner, sparking wild scenes of jubilation and heartache for the champions.

Gakpo had been alive to meet Alexander Isak’s touch and spin before scoring the equaliser, and Gary Neville was left in disbelief with the assist, even if the £125million man didn’t mean it.

Gary Neville praises Alexander Isak’s assist

Liverpool improved after the half-time break and finally found some joy down the right-hand side, after Dominik Szoboszlai looped a cross into the penalty area.

Isak cushioned the ball with his boot and tried to turn, seemingly without knowing Gakpo had arrived, but his touch arrived in the path of his team-mate all the same.

Gakpo then clinically did the rest, firing beyond Robert Sanchez.

“Liverpool have a lot of attacking players on the pitch and it’s hard to keep them down,” said Neville.

“It’s either a brilliant touch from Isak or a bit of luck, I’m not sure.

“But what is important is that Gakpo follows it in. It’s in a brilliant place if he knows he’s there. It’s one of the best little assists you’ll see.”

Alexander Isak is finding his feet at Liverpool

With every passing game, Isak is looking sharper and sharper. He has slowly but surely built up his fitness levels and is now primed for a run of games, having missed out on pre-season.

It was a mixed outing for him at Stamford Bridge, though, with his assist his only real moment of note.

Isak was then taken off on 74 minutes and replaced by Hugo Ekitike, who has provided stern competition in the dogfight to become Arne Slot’s first-choice striker.

Ekitike does look to hold the advantage in that particular tussle, but Isak is no stranger to scoring goals for fun in the Premier League. He is guaranteed to eventually click into top gear for his new club.
