Gary Neville identifies the Arsenal player that gets the best out of Ben White

Gary Neville has told Sky Sports on Monday evening that the presence of Takehiro Tomiyasu gets the best out of fellow Arsenal recruit Ben White.

The duo are two crucial parts of a back five that Mikel Arteta is beginning to rely upon, week in, week out. Gabriel, and Kieran Tierney, too.

Aaron Ramsdale has overtaken Bernd Leno between the sticks. Since the 5-0 defeat to Manchester City, Arteta has rung the defensive changes.

Dropping Rob Holding, Cedric Soares, Calum Chambers and Leno – in came White, Gabriel, Tomiyasu and Ramsdale. The back five have been excellent.

They have started the last five league games, keeping three clean sheets and conceding only three goals. Two came against Palace on Monday night.

But Neville was still full of praise. He thinks the presence of Japan star Tomiyasu gets the best out of £50million signing White at the back.

“Gabriel is back alongside White, Tomiyasu has come in. He is a really good foil for White, because he can play centre-back. He tucks in alongside him.”

Neville on White: Tomiyasu form could see players leave Arsenal

The Japanese star has settled instantly to life in North London with a brilliant string of performances. Defensively, he is incredibly astute.

Still only 22, Tomiyasu has enormous potential. He is not as attacking, but Arsenal’s style means he is better just playing as a defensive right-back.

It gives Nicolas Pepe or Bukayo Saka the freedom to roam on the right flank – with the knowledge that Tomiyasu is behind them, solid.

For White, it is also important. He almost offers the option of a third centre-back at times, especially when the ball is on the left. More protection.
