Ruben Amorim raised many eyebrows with his decision to omit Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United’s squad to face Man City.
It was a memorable afternoon at the Etihad for Manchester United as they claimed a last-gasp derby win over their cross-city rivals. Amad Diallo’s late goal saw Amorim’s side snatch all three points and move within just five points of the defending champions.
Prior to the Manchester Derby, the big talking point was the exclusion of Rashford from Amorim’s squad. The forward’s form this term and last means it didn’t come as a great surprise but now there are major question marks over his future at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville’s advice for Marcus Rashford back in September
Gary Neville warned Marcus Rashford back in September that he needed to get back to being the player who could score 15 to 20 goals for Manchester United. Following a tough campaign in which he netted just eight times in all competitions, Neville urged him to become the main man for United again.
However, we are already halfway through December and after 24 matches, the 27-year-old has just seven goals to his name. There looks to be a lack of desire from the winger to get back to his best and that is also shown in Amorim’s decision to drop him from the squad.
Back in September, Neville told Rashford on Sky Sports: “We know that on that left side, someone who can score 20-30 goals is quite unique and he can do that – he’s proven it. What happened last season is a mystery.
“He gets his new contract, everyone feels like Marcus Rashford is going to kick on and play for England in the Euros, he gets left out of the squad, he had a terrible season, the club had a terrible season. Marcus Rashford has got to get back to being the guy who makes those runs in between full-back and centre-back on this side of the pitch and slotting it into that far corner. If he can score 15-20 goals from this left side Manchester United are going to have a half-decent season,” added the former United defender
Is this now the end for Marcus Rashford at Manchester United?
Rashford has had nearly 18 months to show a desire to change his form at Manchester United and it is clear that something is wrong. Alan Shearer suggests that Rashford does not look happy at United and it could be time for a change of scenery.
With Amorim making his stance clear over Rashford’s current situation, the January transfer window could well be the ideal moment for the club and player to part ways. The forward needs to find a new club where he can regain his motivation to get back to his best.
Diallo now looks to be ahead of Rashford in the pecking order so the Red Devils can afford to let him leave and bring in funds for a homegrown player. According to reports, United want around £60 million for Rashford if they are to sell him next month.
However, TBR Football revealed earlier this month that no decision has been made by Manchester United over Rashford’s future, so it is unclear as to whether they would actually let him go during the winter window.
