Arsenal delivered a familiarly dominant performance against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
But in a lot of respects, Mikel Arteta will be hoping that it isn’t the same old story for Arsenal, who have failed to win the silverware their football deserves over the last two campaigns.
Arsenal have finished second-fiddle to Manchester City in the league, and in truth, Arteta hasn’t come close to winning a domestic cup ever since his early FA Cup triumph.
Of course, it’s difficult to decide whether Arteta would experience any kind of pressure were Arsenal not to win a trophy this season, given he’s the man who’s brought the side this far.
And when discussing something similar on Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville weren’t able to reach a unanimous agreement.
Carragher said Arsenal simply had to win a trophy this season, saying they need to mirror Man City and go further in cup competitions.
But when recalling the trajectory of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side, Neville didn’t quite agree.
Jamie Carragher says it would be ‘unacceptable’ if Arsenal don’t win a trophy
Carragher explained his stance, saying Arsenal should be attacking all competitions.
He shared: “My point on Arsenal and why I still think City is that Arsenal are one of the top clubs in the country.

“But in the last couple of years when they have gone from the league they have gone out from the domestic cups quite early and haven’t got to a final or a semi-final in Europe.
“I think this group of players are good enough that they should be getting to the semis of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup and attacking all the competitions in the way Man City do and Liverpool did in the past under Jurgen Klopp.
“I don’t think it’s acceptable now for a team this good not to win a trophy this season.”
Neville then replied: “I am not sure I am in agreement with that. Do you not see the similarities between the journey which Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool went on where they felt like they were just getting there and getting there and eventually they got them?”
Carragher: “My point being is that Liverpool won the Champions League before the league.
“The point I’m trying to make is City are still going further in competitions, Arsenal should doing that and I think that would take something out of them”.
Arsenal still need two key signings to compete on all fronts
Right now, Arsenal are close to signing Mikel Merino, an addition that will definitely help Arteta compete in all competitions.
However, given that Eddie Nketiah may leave Arsenal in the coming days or weeks, the Gunners could still look a little short up top.
Reiss Nelson might leave Arsenal too, stressing the need for Edu to identify a high-calibre winger who can provide better competition for the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Arsenal are very close to being the finished article right now, but may still struggle in the final months of the season with their squad as thin as it is beyond Arteta’s rebuffed defence.
