Gary Neville delivers stinging verdict on free agent that both Leeds and Arsenal reportedly want
Gary Neville told ITV Sport’s coverage of Netherlands’ 3-2 win over Ukraine on Sunday night that Patrick van Aanholt is a “poor defender”. The Crystal Palace defender – who has been linked with both Leeds and Arsenal with his Palace deal set to expire – lasted 64 minutes. Eventually, the Dutch won.
Van Aanholt, 30, was one of a number of Dutch players about to see their current contracts expire this summer. Gini Wijnaldum is set to join Paris Saint-Germain when his Liverpool deal ends, while Memphis Depay’s Lyon deal ends in a fortnight. The Mirror say Leeds and Arsenal both want him.
Leeds are desperate for a left-back. Gjanni Alioski is much like the aforementioned trio, with no news about the North Macedonia’s future yet to surface. But Neville’s verdict on van Aanholt following last night’s win was pretty scathing – and will surely deter Leeds and Arsenal fans.
“He’s wrong side. It’s typical of Van Aanholt. He’s a poor defender,” Neville said, in the build up to Andriy Yarmolenko’s run into the Dutch area.
Leeds and Arsenal should listen to Neville, regarding van Aanholt
Van Aanholt has been a regular in the Premier League for some years now. The ex-Chelsea man has developed a reputation for even nabbing the odd goal. But the defender earns a whopping £55,000 a week (Spotrac) at Palace and given he is a free agent – he might request a bigger wage than that.
Arsenal do need cover for Kieran Tierney but without European football, he is unlikely to move to The Emirates. Leeds can do a lot better, especially given his wages. Neville’s comments should be heeded as advice.
