Although Arsenal are thriving under Mikel Arteta’s leadership right now, things haven’t always been so rosy since the Spaniard arrived in north London.
Arteta was appointed in 2019, following on from Unai Emery who wasn’t the right candidate to take Arsenal forwards once Arsene Wenger stepped aside.
Arteta inherited a disjointed squad, one that still contained some world-class players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but there was a lot of work to do.
Of course, Arteta managed to win an FA Cup final with that team, when Aubameyang scored two goals against Chelsea at an empty Wembley during COVID-19 restrictions.
Of his back line that day, only Kieran Tierney is still at Arsenal, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Rob Holding, David Luiz and Hector Bellerin have all now departed.
And after Riccardo Calafiori made his Arsenal debut on Sunday against Lyon, it’s clear how far the club have come, effectively overhauling their entire squad in the last four or so years.
That being said, Gary Neville wasn’t always convinced that Arsenal were heading in the right direction.
Gary Neville replies to fan account about Arsenal comments he made back in 2021
After Arsenal lost 2-0 to Brentford on the opening evening of the season back in 2021, Neville was pretty blunt on Arsenal’s recruitment and strategy – saying it was not good enough.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: “I don’t know the plan at Arsenal. The recruitment has been really poor. I don’t get the strategy, I don’t get the direction of how they’re taking the team.”

Of course, given how much Arsenal have now improved, those comments are often now laughed at among the club’s fan base.
And after his words were again posted on X on Tuesday, Neville now decided to send a jovial message in response.
Neville wrote: “Congratulations on your success well done” – words which seem pretty genuine until you also see the emoji that the pundit included.

Neville followed up on his words with a trophy emoji – seemingly reminding those Arsenal fans mocking his comments that all of this good football hasn’t led to serious silverware.
Of course, the pundit is now often complimentary about the Gunners, but seemingly couldn’t resist a little jibe on this occasion.
That being said, Neville’s fellow pundits Roy Keane and Ian Wright have just provided their Premier League predictions for the coming season – not agreeing on the same outcome.
