Gary Neville has admitted that Arsenal once ‘shook’ Manchester United to the ground in the race for the Premier League title.

The Manchester United legend has been speaking about what he feels Mikel Arteta’s men need to do to lay a marker down in this year’s title race.

Neville believes Arsenal need to make a statement by beating Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad Stadium later this month.

The Gunners are set to travel to Manchester on March 31 for what looks set to be a defining clash in the title race.

While City are very much the current powerhouse in English football, United were formerly seen as the dominant force in the Premier League.

Neville was part of the United side which dominated for years but Arsenal did pip them to the title on three occasions.

And the former full-back has been discussing Arsenal’s statement wins at Old Trafford in 1998 and 2002 during campaigns when the Gunners went on to win the title.

Neville admits Arsenal once stunned Manchester United

Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, Neville explained why he believes Arsenal or Liverpool need to beat City to damage the champions’ unwavering belief.

“To make this monumental change that you need to take on a team like City and damage their belief and confidence you need to beat them,” he said.

“I think Liverpool and Arsenal need to think about those games and I’m not saying go out there and charge at them and panic but I think you need to beat them.

“I always thought when Arsenal won the league against us they came to Old Trafford and they didn’t just go and get a point, they shocked us, they shook us to the ground. Overmars and Wiltord.

“Then you think of when Chelsea beat us, when Mourinho won his first title, they beat us. I always think if you are going to go and win the league and damage the mentality of a proven you have got to go and do it.”

Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Old Trafford back in 2002 ultimately secured the title for them during that season.

The Gunners face some big games over the coming weeks but no fixture feels more crucial than their trip to the Etihad.

Arteta’s side fell to a 4-1 defeat in the same fixture last season, which damaged their title hopes significantly.

A win at City would certainly lay a marker down for Arsenal but it will be no easy task as Guardiola’s men are finding their best form once again.
