Liverpool beat Arsenal in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday evening as the Reds continue to grow into the Arne Slot era.

The Merseyside club put on a very strong performance against their Premier League rivals this week, and there were a few interesting tactical tweaks to keep an eye on too.

Indeed, Slot experimented with his team in this match, and speaking on the Official Liverpool Podcast, Gary McAllister noted a change in role for Dominik Szoboszlai,

McAllister noticed that Szoboszlai was playing as more of a number six during this game with Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones playing ahead of him, praising the Hungarian for what was said to be an ‘excellent’ performance.

Interestingly, this comes just days after it was reported that Liverpool do see Szoboszlai as a potential defensive option.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s role change

McAllister spoke about the £60m man and the new role he was playing against Arsenal.

“I thought Szoboszlai, Curtis and Harvey were excellent. The way they rotated, but it was Szoboszlai who sat there as the number six for the most of the first half so there was a little change there as well.”

Dominik Szoboszlai is another option for Liverpool

Szoboszlai likely won’t be Liverpool’s first-choice defensive midfielder this season, but he could end up being a useful option for the Reds.

Indeed, the Hungarian has shown that he’s capable of playing in this deeper role now, and if push comes to shove, he can be utilised there.

Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister are both much more likely to start in that deeper position this term, while a new signing is still possible with the transfer window open.

However, the fact that Szoboszlai has shown another string to his bow certainly isn’t a bad thing, and it could well come in handy if an injury or suspension crisis strikes Liverpool at the wrong time.

Versatility is such a key attribute in any team these days, and Szoboszlai has now shown that he’s capable of playing in multiple roles to a high level.
