Gary Lineker has explained that Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe is struggling following his switch to English football, but believes he still needs time at the Emirates Stadium.
The 24-year-old started in the away defeat to Sheffield United on Monday night, as the Gunners missed the chance to go third in the Premier League.
Unai Emery’s team once again fell short on the road, as Lys Mousset tapped in the winner from close-range during a 1-0 result.
Pepe moved to North London in the summer for a mammoth £72million (BBC) transfer fee and he was expected to hit the ground running after tearing it up with French club Lille.
But the right-winger drew a blank once again on Monday and he’s scored just once in 11 games across all competitions.
The skilful wide player missed a glaring opportunity in the penalty box after starting off a positive move and is lacking composure with his finishing.
“Not happening for Pepe at present, but he can play. Just needs time,” Lineker wrote on his personal Twitter account.
Pepe showed Arsenal fans some real exciting moments at Bramall Lane, as he has electric pace and also quick feet that can bamboozle defenders.
But his first-half miss summed up his start to life at his new club and the record signing is expected to deliver much better.
There is certainly a talented individual for Emery to unlock moving forward and it’s still early into his first taste of English football, but he needs to start firing if the club want to break back into the top four.
Pepe should try take a leaf out of the book of Liverpool Mohamed Salah, who is the expert at cutting in from the right flank and scoring goals with his left foot.
