Liverpool need to find a new manager.
After Jurgen Klopp dropped the bombshell that he will be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, the Reds have to look for a new gaffer.
The Merseyside club haven’t been in the market for a new manager for almost 10 years now, and the landscape has changed a lot in that time.
Indeed, the landscape has changed so much that many of the managers that will be considered now were actually still playing when the Reds hired Klopp back in 2015.
One such gaffer is Xabi Alonso, and speaking on The Rest is Football, Gary Lineker has suggested that the 42-year-old could be in line for this job.

Lineker suggests Alonso for Liverpool
The pundit shared his verdict on who Liverpool could go for next.
“So they will now have to find a replacement and who that might be, the obvious one, maybe there’s a couple, but probably Xabi Alonso, the job he’s doing at Bayer Leverkusen, I think he’ll be in their thoughts, and I also think he’ll be in the thoughts of other football clubs. Most notably if Ancelotti goes, Real Madrid could come up, also someone like Bayern Munich because things aren’t going so great for them,” Lineker said.
Standout candidate
Lineker is absolutely right to pick Alonso out as a standout candidate here.
Not only is the 42-year-old already a fan favourite at Anfield, he’s proving himself to be a truly elite manager over in Germany.
He’s on course to dethrone Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race, and the last manager to do that was none other than a man named Jurgen Klopp.
Alonso could be the perfect successor to Klopp at Anfield, and we wouldn’t be shocked at all if he’s right at the top of the Reds’ shortlist.
