Gary Lineker thinks Arsenal have a ‘wonderfully talented’ player in England match-winner Bukayo Saka
Gary Lineker has lauded Bukayo Saka on Twitter after the Arsenal winger scored his first senior England goal in a friendly with Austria on Wednesday night.
Gareth Southgate started Saka at the Riverside Stadium as the Three Lions began their preparations for Euro 2020. It marked the 19-year-old’s fourth start for his country in five-caps following his debut last October.
Saka had registered his first assist in his second senior international appearance during a 3-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in November. But his maiden goal had to wait until this week when he scored the winning effort against Franco Foda’s side.
Saka scored to round off a strong attacking move by England as they look to build momentum for Euro 2020. The winger found the back of the net in the 56th minute to become the third teenager to score for the Three Lions while playing for Arsenal (BBC).
He joins Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who also scored their maiden goals aged 19. Both former Gunners netted their firsts in World Cup qualifiers against Croatia and San Marino respectively.
Among the plaudits Saka received, Linker took to social media to share a congratulatory message lauding the Hale End sensation. Fellow BBC Sport pundit Alan Shearer was likewise impressed.
“Congratulations to Bukayo Saka on his first England goal,” Lineker wrote. “Such a wonderfully talented young footballer.”
TBR’s view: Arsenal will be delighted with Saka
Saka stood out on England’s left-wing all night against Austria with a driving performance. His goal from a tight angle capped it off, having also created his country’s best moment of the first half.
The Arsenal product slipped a clever pass through Xaver Schlager’s legs for Jack Grealish in the 29th minute. He then played in Harry Kane, but the Three Lions captain could not convert. Saka also volleyed high in the opening period as Southgate searched for an opener.
Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta would have been delighted by Saka’s stunning performance. Having taken his north London form onto the international stage after scoring seven goals and penning 10 assists last season.
They will now hope that continues at Euro 2020 so that he can play an instrumental role in a better Premier League campaign next term.
