Gary Lineker has named one Liverpool star as the player in the current game he would least like to come up against due to their pace and intelligence.
Of course, this campaign could still see Liverpool win four trophies to send Jurgen Klopp off in style. They have already secured the Carabao Cup with victory over Chelsea on Sunday.
For many, it was the performance of Virgil van Dijk which will be remembered for a long time. The Dutchman finished the game as one of the few first-team players on the pitch for Liverpool. And obviously, it was his header late on in extra-time which handed the Reds the trophy.
Gary Lineker lauds Virgil van Dijk
It was a colossal performance from van Dijk, who lifted the cup with Klopp. Certainly, you can understand why some view van Dijk as the world’s best in his position.

And speaking on The Rest Is Football, Gary Lineker picked out the Liverpool skipper as he was asked which modern player he would hate to face.
“Virgil van Dijk because I love defenders that dive in, and Virgil van Dijk never dives in. He stays on his feet all the time and he’s very quick. And obviously, he’s a real athlete as well and intelligent, so yeah, probably Virgil,” he said.
Liverpool star looks to be back to his best this season
Van Dijk has had to deal with a lot of questions about his ability over the last few years, since returning from that serious injury in the 2020/21 season.
At times, it has appeared that the 32-year-old is past his best. There have been some uncharacteristic performances. However, any doubts about him have definitely been put to bed this season.
Van Dijk has been a giant for Liverpool, particularly this term. It is notable just how good the likes of Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez have all looked alongside him.
And this could prove to be an unbelievable first season as captain for van Dijk.
