Gary Lineker says £45m midfielder wanted by Tottenham has ‘really good numbers’

Tottenham Hotspur continue to be linked with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher ahead of the January transfer window.

Spurs could certainly do with bolstering their midfield ranks next month and the England international seems to still be in their sights.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at Tottenham remains uncertain, while Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are set to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations early in 2024.

The Athletic reported just after Christmas that Spurs are still watching Gallagher‘s situation very closely.

The Blues are apparently willing to offload their player in January, with his contract entering its last 18 months and no indication of a renewal.

BBC Sport pundit and Tottenham cult hero Gary Lineker has now sung Gallagher’s praises on the Rest Is Football podcast.

“Conor Gallagher continues to put in a good shift for them,” said Lineker. “His numbers are really good as well actually, if you look at them.”

Tottenham could potentially sign Conor Gallagher for £45million

As per Sky Sports via Opta just before Christmas, Gallagher ranks first at Chelsea in a number of metrics.

These are assists, chances created, tackles, interceptions, possession won (in general and in the final third), and distance covered.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Spurs aren’t far off reaching Chelsea’s valuation for Gallagher.

“Chelsea will consider offers of £45-50million for Conor Gallagher,” he wrote on X a few days ago.

“It’s clear Mauricio Pochettino values him, and Gallagher is content to fight for his place, meaning Chelsea won’t be looking for any cut-price sale.

“It’s understood Spurs, late last window, wanted to spend around £35million.”

Gallagher is a top talent who certainly ticks a lot of boxes for Tottenham. He’s talented, young, has his whole career ahead of him and is Premier League proven.

Indeed, it’s somewhat surprising that Chelsea are apparently willing to sell the 23-year-old in January. But if they are, Spurs might as well try to sign him.
