'It was fun': Gary Lineker reacts on Twitter as Harry Kane surpasses his England record
Harry Kane scored his 49th goal for England tonight as the Three Lions saw off Switzerland at Wembley to continue their good form under Gareth Southgate.
Kane fired in from the penalty spot in the second half despite not having his best game or the most chances. The striker from Kane – low into the bottom left corner – took the Tottenham striker ahead of Gary Lineker in the record books and level with Bobby Charlton. He is now just four shy of Wayne Rooney out in front.
And taking to Twitter in the aftermath of Kane’s strike tonight, Lineker himself has reacted with a hint of sarcasm.
Lineker, of course, missed the chance to make it to 49 himself. But there was no mistake from Kane, who dispatched his penalty with ease to keep up his fine record from the spot.
Surely, then, it is now a matter of when and not if for Kane in terms of breaking Rooney’s record.
TBR’s View: Kane Oozes Class Even On Quiet England Nights
Kane barely had a sniff all night but when the time came to get himself on the scoresheet he made absolutely no mistake.
The Tottenham striker is in fine form and there is no doubt – barring a huge injury – that he will be England’s all-time leading goalscorer in just a few months. In fact, he could be going into Qatar as the main man with ease.
Lineker’s response here is typical of the Spurs legend. He’ll be delighted for Kane, and will want to see him eclipse Rooney now as well.
